Something New

January 15, 2023

It’s still early in a New Year with new possibilities. It won’t be long, however, before the “Resolutionists” give up and fade out once again. A new winter day offers the possibility of Something New!

Did you Decide if there is something new in store for you? If you’re seeking a better outcome, you will need a different approach. Quite simply:

What got you here won’t take you there!

Something new can appear in many forms:

  • New thinking
  • New thought partners
  • New diet
  • New fitness routine
  • New process
  • New role
  • New career
  • New expectations
  • New approach to old problems
  • New belief in yourself and capacity for change

Whatever shape ‘new’ takes for you, it’s the commitment to it that will make the difference. My last post explored the essential elements of Inspiration and Motivation. Presuming you have gathered ample stores of both, it’s now time to start and then to stick with it.

Our past is a useful informant but a lousy guide on the path forward. In fact, old habits and stale thinking are quite good at convincing us to stay put; that little voice in the back of our head says “why risk it because it might not work?” or “why put in so much effort because it probably won’t pay off?”. The gravitational pull is real but it can be resisted.

If you don’t go for it, one thing is for sure: you will never discover what was possible!

Once you’ve made the decision to pursue something new, a great way to increase the likelihood of sticking with it until you realize the outcome is to share your commitment with someone you trust and who has your back. That level of accountability for progress elevates the effort and sustains commitment for much longer than would otherwise be possible. Better yet, if that other person — or an engaged team — shares the commitment, then the level of energy toward realizing the goal becomes exponential. (That’s why workout partners and executive coaches help you get results!)

In most cases, the worst thing that can happen from pursuing something new is that you’ll learn more about yourself; you’ll be better prepared for what comes next. The best thing is that you’ll change the paradigm forever and for the better. Why not you? Why not right now?

Tempus Maximize!
