Big New Idea

January 20, 2020

Every once in a great while, a Big New Idea comes along. We can think of countless, remarkable inventions and improvements that have changed our lives and how we live them.

There are also Big New Ideas that are generated within our businesses and which can transform how we work together and inform what we will accomplish in pursuit of our shared vision. The seed of an idea sometimes lands in the most unlikely places, but only germinates and grows when it encounters fertile conditions.

A Big New Idea can emerge from a series of much smaller ones, all of which offer lessons regarding what works and what else is needed. As those insights are accumulated, something with even greater potential can be imagined for the first time.  Once you dare to believe, the Big New Idea begins taking shape.

To those on the outside, it may appear that the Big New Idea just happened into existence and not much thought is given to how it actually came to be.  Or even to why it’s needed.  Interestingly, when a Big New Idea launches — and actually works — it’s typically because of the time, energy, effort, anxiety and anticipation that preceded its launch. When it’s good, meaning “when it achieves its intended objectives”, it just feels right to those involved and they can no longer imagine life before it.  New energy, and the spirit of co-discovery that fosters, infuse life into the Big New Idea. Only then does it begin to take shape and, in turn, transform those who experience it.

It’s when we’re dedicated to the Exceptional, rather than accepting the comfortable and the ordinary, that conditions are fertile for an idea to sprout, grow and spread.  But there is only one way to achieve that outcome and that’s to cultivate its potential, by thoughtfully feeding and shaping its growth in real-time.

What’s your Big New Idea?  And how are you helping it grow?
