Belief System

February 3, 2020

Leadership is an elusive art.  To be effective, a leader’s belief system must be rock solid at its core, then shared with and embraced by others.  That belief system, and the unique personal style which expresses it, must be unwavering.

It can take a very long time, if ever, for a belief system to be rewarded with world-class results. When those results materialize, however, the moment is magical.  Just ask Coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, who’ve waited for exactly 50 years to win Super Bowl 54 in epic, come-from-behind style.  (For those who’ve been watching them play this season, it seems the Chiefs have perfected the art of producing the impossible in a flash.)  For the team and their unwavering fans who stuck with them through the years, this victory must be especially sweet.  After all, they earned it – “the old-fashioned way” – because they believe in each other and in their seasoned leader.

Coach Reid is the sort of humble leader who always shares credit but individually accepts criticism. He’s stayed true to his style through the ups and downs of professional football and life, which is a trait to be admired and emulated.

It takes talented people, working within the right system, using optimum training and tools, to achieve the pinnacle of success.  Yet it’s the thoughtful integration and disciplined use of those resources that creates the magic.  And, oh, what magic it is to watch when it all comes together!

Sports reflects life and respects teamwork.  It also values leadership in ways that can’t be quantified but can be witnessed.  Thank you, Coach Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, for reminding us of the unstoppable power that a genuine belief system can generate!
