Perspective Matters

August 22, 2021

We each hold a certain view of the world, based upon how we have learned to see things over time, through our experiences and education. Occasionally, we look up and are surprised by a view we didn’t expect to see. In such situations, perspective matters.

When confronted with something new, and especially when dealing with a disconcerting situation, we have two choices:

  • Deny what we see happening right in front of us, with our own eyes, and fail to study the broader facts of the situation. Or….
  • Accept the reality in front of us, then seek out and make a serious effort to understand the facts of the situation.

Your choice of perspective will have radically different implications for your decisions and, consequently, for your life and the lives of those around you.

When perspective is governed by dogma and colored by suspicion, facts are unwelcome. Without room for accepting new information, then coupling it with common sense and an abiding respect for others, truth dies in darkness. Denial and mistrust do not make a situation untrue, any more than blindly believing that the world is flat can make that a reality.

Fortunately, there’s an alternate approach for those who are open to new ideas, those who aren’t fundamentally suspicious of the intentions of others, especially when a dynamic situation calls for actively seeking new facts and solutions. When chosen actions are made out of respect and concern for the welfare of others, truth finds the light.

Sometimes the facts will make you uncomfortable, even a bit queasy, but that’s when your perspective matters most.
