Achieving Critical Mass
It’s remarkable to behold when a team achieves critical mass and their positive results accumulate and accelerate. It’s the effective combination of these six essential elements that power this force of nature:
The Right People
Achieving Critical Mass is impossible without the right people, meaning individuals with the essential Mindset and critical Skillset to produce desired results. Do they possess the awareness, the drive and the competitive spirit to perform at a higher level? In particular, do they have the self-discipline to continue pressing forward in the face of challenges?
The Right Purpose
A team of the right people are motivated by a worthwhile purpose to rally behind and lift up. Where there is a meaningful “Why?”, you’ll tend to find that teams will readily figure out “How?” and then discover “What?” produces desired results. Without purpose, potential dies.
The Right Place
Circumstances play a role here, since a team needs an environment that allows flexible formation and active development. It’s a combination of external factors, such as working in a free market economy, plus internal factors, such as linking diverse team members with complementary skills.
The Right Resources
Access to essential inputs — Human, Technical and Material — enables the right people to use them in the optimum ways to fuel progress. There must also be sufficient resources to sustain the effort until critical mass can be achieved.
The Right Time
It takes time to assemble the elements of critical mass, in the right combination, but they are for naught unless there is a market need or a market opportunity to launch a new offering. The market must be willing or at least open to considering what’s on offer. And, presuming it is open to the possibility, the market must be substantial enough in potential, with immediate capacity to accept what’s on offer. Those elements are essential to build and then sustain momentum. Sometimes the very first “new thing” just arrives before the market is quite ready for it.
The Right Attitude
Critical mass depends upon belief that the seemingly impossible becomes possible with the right combination of people, purpose, place, resources and time linked together by perseverance and optimism. Breakthroughs are rooted in belief.
When teams excel in producing desired results, odds are that you’ll discover the optimum combination of these six factors. Melded together, their density and their intensity produce Critical Mass.
