I was engaged in a wide-ranging conversation with a senior operations leader this week. We spoke about the evolution of his role over two decades and how he worked his way into a leadership position in a growing business. When I asked “What do you like most about your current role?”, his reply was instantaneous: “Winning!”

That one word answer packs a lot of energy into it and it may bring various meanings to your mind as you read it. You may be thinking about beating the competition or generating profits, but you might be thinking like him as he explained further. He stated that winning to him was watching his team members succeed in their jobs and advance within the company. Healthy growth becomes the ultimate result.

Soak in that for a moment. Winning isn’t about you when you are the Leader (aka the Coach). It’s all about the Team. The satisfaction from seeing others thrive becomes its own reward and is at the heart of becoming a servant leader. This is the embodiment of a People First mentality!

When a leader embraces a Shared Purpose and equips team members for Empowered Execution, winning at all levels and in multiple directions becomes possible. Go forth and prosper in a winning way!
