Who do you look up to?

January 8, 2015
We all need that one person in our life, someone we truly look up to.  I’ll bet a name and face have already leaped into your mind as you read this message.  At least I hope so.  If you’re especially fortunate to have more than one role model for your life, I suspect that one stands out above them all.

When that special person appears in your formative years, he or she can provide a rock solid foundation upon which to build your life. The person you most look up to becomes more than just an example of what you aspire to become; ideally they will provide you crucial guidance and correction along the path.  My son was delighted to discover an old family photo over the Holidays that captures the essence of the relationship my brother and I enjoyed with our father.

It’s not necessary for that person to be a relative, however, or to appear when you are young.  At any point in time, they can appear and step into the guiding role.  Occasionally you seek them out, but more often they discover something worth nurturing in you.  You find yourself looking up to them based upon how they interact with you.  It’s a two-way relationship.

If you’ve been blessed with such a person in your life, don’t overlook an opportunity to thank them if you can.  If they are no longer near or still living, it’s still possible to thank them in a most remarkable way.  That’s by paying forward the same gifts they gave to you and offering a similar example for someone else to look up to.

This sense of purpose makes daily life and work more fulfilling and infinitely more valuable.  Whether you’re the one looking up, or eyes are on you, recognize the importance and treasure the relationship.

Brilliant! So true without question I fall in the blessed group with more than one inspiration. Though the best point is your closing statement on impact of ones daily life/work it can bring continued joy.
