Tree of Liberty
For 244 years our Tree of Liberty has been steadily growing. As a seedling, it was planted in fertile ground and established deep roots. As the trunk rose up and thickened, its branches spread out and continue to do so today.
The Tree of Liberty is strong and has weathered countless storms. The portion we can see has the scars of time to prove it, yet the root system has always sustained it. We must protect and care for the ground in which it lives and provide the nourishment it needs to thrive.
While the Tree of Liberty represents Freedom, it also stands for Personal Responsibility. Dedicated work is required to sustain it and many have gone before us to protect it with their lives.
From a distance, the Tree of Liberty is impressive, with an expanse like no other tree before it. Yet when we come close under its branches and inspect the trunk, we can see and feel its imperfections as a living thing; at the same time, we can marvel at what has grown up in spite of the challenges it has faced. And we can resolve to take better care of our Tree of Liberty, by healing the wounds that could hinder its continued growth. That begins by pausing to respect what the Tree of Liberty represents for all of us, together as One Nation.
