Sometimes you can see it when they’re brand new.  Sometimes it takes time and patience before potential is revealed. That’s certainly true of finely bred show horses, but the reality also applies to new employees.

Potential is the aptitude to produce something of value.  What is done with that potential ultimately defines the outcome.  If you are a leader of a business unit or a company, one of your greatest responsibilities is to nurture and develop the employee potential that has been entrusted to you.  After all, they are the ones who will produce the desired results.  In fact, your success in these endeavors will elevate your own potential.

Potential begins with the “mindset” of the employee.  What personal traits do they bring to the team?  How will their attitude and drive combine with their raw aptitude to become productive.  If a new employee with potential is simply tossed into the deep end to see if they will swim, some may but others will flounder.  Potential will be lost.  There is a better way.

It’s when “mind set” is thoughtfully partnered with “skill set” that potential can be developed.  What resources, information and training will leverage natural strengths and fill the gaps?  A baseline assessment, when coupled with a career development and training plan, highlights how potential will be realized – for the employee, the leader and the company.  It also provides a means to measure forward progress. Those combined elements shape raw talent into high performance.

Success lies at the intersection of potential and performance.
