Into the Gray
Our view of the future is not nearly as clear as we might like it to be. On one level, we have an intense desire to visualize and understand what the future holds for us; from another perspective, it’s likely best that we cannot see quite that far. When we gaze into the future, it’s rather like staring into the gray…
It’s fascinating that the best way I have found to envision the future is to study the past, from the perspective of the present. History does indeed have a remarkable tendency to repeat itself, although not necessarily in quite its original form; there is always a new twist or shape taken as it approaches the future. Said another way:
Patterns repeat themselves and it is wise for us to recognize them.
It’s only when we can step away from the daily fray for a brief time, then reflect on where we’ve been and what we’ve been accomplishing, that we can clearly see it for what it has been. And only then consider what the future might become.
Information moves faster than ever before, thereby accentuating its immediacy and accelerating its impact. The advent of Artificial Intelligence (aka “AI”) suggests that the vast information suddenly available to us can interpret itself. My view is that we, through our collective experiences, are needed to interpret the true meaning and provide context. Although I cannot see any more clearly into the gray than anyone else, I can see even greater value in our human connection going forward.
I’ve come to realize that time and events move faster than my ability to fully process them and adapt in the moment. I’ve also discovered that my life perspective, gained through exploration and the lasting lessons of practical experience, are what provide the means to keep pace. Let’s keep moving forward, into the gray, together.
