Almost There

August 20, 2022

Close your eyes and think about that feeling you get when you finally get close to achieving a goal, at the point you’re almost there but still face that final push to the finish. The bigger the goal, the more powerful the feeling when it hits you!

It’s the moment when you’re still on the last leg of journey and you can sense that the goal is within reach. Here are a few examples that stand out in my mind:

  • Entering your final semester in pursuit of a degree
  • Approaching the final exam on your way to a professional certification
  • Preparing for your final check-ride in an aircraft
  • Reaching the last mile of a marathon
  • Figuring out how you’re going to ask her or him to partner with you as one
  • Counting the final days and hours preceding the birth of a child
  • Writing a book and arriving within 30 days of its publication date

It’s at these life moments and others like them that we feel a sudden burst of energy, coupled with the realization that there is still work to be be done in order to Finish Strong. Somehow we dig down deep and find an extra kick to energize our efforts the rest of the way.

We can now appreciate the work that it’s taken to get this far and it’s that awareness that convinces us success is within our grasp. As anticipation increases with each passing moment, confidence grows and that last phase of the journey becomes a powerful reward in itself. It’s when you know that you can, you will.

The power of visualization is one of our greatest human gifts. When we do finally get there, we feel exhilarated beyond words. And yet that very moment is a brief one to be celebrated; it is also the moment that we realize it only feels so good because of the investment we were willing to make to succeed.

Much has been written about the differences between feelings of anticipation and realization. There is a saying that “Anticipation is greater than realization”; I’ll suggest to you that they are both wonderful and the former amplifies the latter!

Then the next adventure awaits….
