Be Nice…

…..or Get Out! The sign at a local equestrian business announced their business philosophy with a sign hung on the wall, but this public declaration only confirmed what I’d already noticed about the place. The family that owns and operates the business and the people that work there are some of the nicest folks I’ve ever met. They are living their stated value through their daily actions and they attract other nice people with whom to do business.

When you consider the idea of acting “nice”, some might say that doesn’t really belong in the rough and tumble “real world” of business. I believe that it has a central role, however, and offer these thoughts regarding what being “nice” means in a business setting:

> Being nice means being respectful of others, but it doesn’t mean being weak. Making tough decisions and solving problems can be navigated more effectively by being focused, determined and kind.

> Being highly competitive is compatible with being nice too, as long as business ethics are upheld. Good sportsmanship is the best sportsmanship.

> Ignoring mediocre performance isn’t wise and it certainly isn’t fair to the company or nice to coworkers. Setting high standards, having clear expectations and accountability are worthy motives and ultimately the most honest approach to take in dealing with others.

> Creativity and positive energy thrive in a nice environment, but quickly wither away in a mean-spirited one.

> Dealing with negative behavior can be uncomfortable, but is much easier to confront if you focus on correcting the behavior without diminishing the person who is exhibiting it. You never know what issues another person may be dealing with in their life.

Holding others you associate with to a respectful standard of behavior — to being nice — is the best way to foster a positive environment. If others aren’t willing to be nice, however, it’s time for them to get out!
