Worthy of the Work

“Leadership isn’t about being in charge. It’s about being worthy of the responsibility.”
When Leadership Worthy was published a couple of years ago, I wanted to challenge the worn-out notion that leadership is simply a position you hold or a title you earn. True leadership isn’t granted — it’s built on trust and earned, daily, by how you show up and what you do. Leadership exists in different forms. Your individual actions reveal your worthiness to be followed by others.
As I reflected on the incredible impact of this week, when nearly 50 sales professionals came together from across the country for our annual “Sales Jam” to explore how they will elevate their skills to accelerate positive outcomes for clients and healthy growth for our business, I was moved to share these thoughts with you today. Their stimulation of new ideas and active sharing of best thinking is about the power of influence and not position.
That kind of thought leadership takes humility. It requires awareness, intentionality, and a commitment to growth — not just for yourself, but for the people you serve. In today’s world of constant noise and increasing speed, worthy leadership is a steadying force: grounded, real, and focused on what matters.
It’s easy to look the part and much harder to live it, especially when no one’s watching.
But those are the moments — the quiet decisions, the consistent actions, the uncomfortable conversations — that define who you become as a leader. They reveal whether you’re merely in charge, or truly worthy of the work.
Who are you leading that deserves your very best today?
Pause. Reflect. Then lead like it matters, because it does.
