Pause and Reflect
Our busy lives spin ever faster in a hectic, and increasingly chaotic, world. Weather, war, politics and economics are amplified by the dramatic social media forces that envelop us. To pause and reflect is increasingly difficult — and therefore more important than ever for us to do.
I had the opportunity to take a step back in recent days to enjoy some family and recharge time. This getaway brought unexpected surprises, including a first-ever viewing of the aurora borealis (aka “The Northern Lights”). Until it happened, I had no idea it was about to; when it did, I was instantly captivated. The experience highlighted the fact that miracles happen when we least expect them but require our focused attention to notice.
I have not spent nearly enough time in recent years gazing at the night sky; I remember it fondly from my days as a farmer, out in the countryside on a frigid night, and my early years camping as a Boy Scout. In most cases and in many places, its majesty is washed out by our human-made lighting. But in this special place and at this moment in time, the night sky offered rare surprises. Had I been in my usual hurry, I would likely have missed it.
As active leaders in business and of our own respective lives, a conscious decision is required to pause and reflect.
Granted this is easier said than done, yet the choice is within our control. This philosophical observation is a gift I was given by Mother Nature and which I freely share with you. How will you pause and reflect today at the mysteries of life and your life’s purpose? Go ahead, give it a try; realize that if you blink, however, that special moment will be gone forever….
