That’s exactly what a group of talented administrative professionals discovered about their roles this week through teamwork and interaction. They learned that their mission goes far beyond the daily tasks associated with office administration. They discovered that to Keep it Positive enables them to Make it Possible!

I affectionately refer to this team as our Human Super Computer, but what makes them especially powerful is their knack for Creating Value through their vital support services. To me, their role is a lot like that of a Flight Controller in Mission Control for NASA’s space program. They provide vital navigation and systems information, resolve multiple problems (often simultaneously) and provide the calming influence that enables flight crews to remain focused and effective under pressure.  They provide a vital conduit between the Flight Director (Branch Manager) and the astronauts (Account Managers).

Stick with me as take this metaphor a bit further.  Along with considerable aptitude for the technical tasks at hand, the Flight Controller must remain calm and positive under pressure. Things don’t always go as planned and cool minds are required to solve problems. It’s impossible to think clearly if your hair is on fire!  So it goes for the administrative manager. Others feed off their personal energy, both positive and negative.

The Missions of space exploration and that of extraordinary business require many of the same talents. When you realize what’s at stake and appreciate your profound influence on the outcome, it’s much easier to Keep it Positive when pressures of the day close in around you. Only then will you Make it Possible for the mission to succeed.
